POS Software Trends Report – 2017

It may be the Uber Effect or just a natural shift in generational practices and preferences. The point of have been disrupted by the transformative power of mobility. More number of restaurants are investing in mobile payment and ordering options as they find the perfect blend of agility, personalization and security.

Hospitality Technology produces its POS Software Trends Report every year in order to gauge the current landscape and also to see what the near future holds for POS investments. HT queries restaurant operators during Q4 regarding POS purchasing plans. The upward trajectory of mobile is evidenced as reports over last 4 years. In 2012, mobile POS was interested by only 38%, whereas in 2017 around 52% operators say mobile POS capabilities will influence as their next upgrade.

Increasing preference for mobile ordering and payment has been enabled by mobility mirrors guests. HT’s 2016 Customer Engagement Technology Study says that 56% diners say the ability for using mobile pay had influenced their restaurant selection. It goes up to 66% for take-out/delivery operations. The biggest trend will be the POS software in 2017. “Mobility and accessibility to sell outside the traditional four walls while not creating a need for duplicate entry into the POS.


Technology suppliers recognize the need of enabling omni channel experiences for restaurant online ordering website. Verifone predicts 2017 POS trends as “brick and mortar stores that begin to offer check-out and in-store experiences that are equal to or better than those available online, will have a major impact on POS software trends. This will happen as more customers become accustomed to sharing personal information with retailers, allowing them to create an engaging client experience where the customer can pay on their smart phone, at the counter or online.”

A slight dip in overall spending is shown by the HT’s survey. A modest growth from 2016 in restaurants is looking to add new features to already existing POS software. In 2016, it was 59% whereas in 2017 it has increased to 60%. An increase can be observed in operators planning to install new vendor’s POS. It has increased from 18% in 2016 to 21% in 2017. Another highest area of investment is expanding the installation of base POS software from a current vendor, 37% this year and was 46% last year. Around 28% plan to develop and/or deploy POS for use on a mobile device.

Identifying what business drivers will be influencing POS upgrades, there are two choices held their positions from last year. 66% by Preparing for EMV and adding mobile POS 52%. Despite the EMV Liability shift, which went into effect in October of 2015, many of the operators have delayed the implementation of EMV devices, due to costs still outweighing potential charge backs. There are also three areas that saw the largest increase from 2016 include prepping for EMV from 66% from 58%, adding mobile POS 52% from 46% and e-commerce integration 33% from 22%. When HT finally asked survey takers to rank top functionalities for a subsequent POS upgrade, Mobile payment, integration and tablet-based POS held onto the top three slots with mobile wallet at 49%, integration with other systems at 48%, and tablet-based POS software garnering 45% of votes. Suppliers were asked to detail what is being done to specifically address mobility and the shift to EMV, in addition to their predictions for what will impact POS software trends in 2017.
